A Linear Variable Displacement Transducer converts the motion of soil sample deformation (or other movement) into electrical current.
How do LVDTs work?
The Linear Variable Displacement Transducer (also known as a Linear Variable Differential Transformer) contains three coils (one primary, two secondary). When high-frequency AC is applied to the primary coil, a magnetic field is generated between the secondary coils. A sliding rod displaces the core, thus providing a change in voltage proportional to the displacement of the core. This value is the dynamic displacement of the tested sample.
Why is it called Linear Variable Differential Transformer?
The device provides a measurement of linear movement at variable positions. The output is the difference in voltage between the secondary coils.
What are the applications of LVDTs?
Consolidation, shear, triaxial, and other soil testing applications.
